FMP- Second Illustration

The dark block pattern is dominat in this illustration because it has textured patterns which make it bold and dynamic. The darkness of this area unbalances the composition making the right side heavier. The flowing movement of the block colours is liquified because it is organic. This movement gives it a free form. The white writing overlaid on this area creates a light effect contrast with the darker areas which gives it tone. As it is faded it reminds me of a memory or dream that is not there anymore.
The subtle colours on the model make her soft and gentle because she is not dominant and becomes apart of the illustration. The figure is highlighted with different colours and dark lines which gives her tone and makes her look three dimensional. This also gives the illustration depth and makes it look realistic.
Excitement is created by the busy composition and the variety of marks created. The text and imagery have been juxtaposed together to create layered textures which overlap and create depth.
In contrast to the bold, blocky mark making there is subtle linear drawing of pillars. These have been added to support the fact that these illustrations are about Athens and you would relate these kind of pillars with Greek ruins. The pillars have been created in monochrome which makes them simple and minimalistic.
The small graffiti circles have been placed around the figure to highlight her shape. These circles have become a pattern as they are repeated. Also the circles balance out the composition because thy are placed either side of the figure.
The text has been randomly applied with no formal order which makes the illustration loud and messy. With the text being randomly placed it supports the idea of graffiti being playfully applied to street walls.
I like this illustration because it has subtle colour and lines which have be used to highlight intricit detail and gives it a calm atmosphere.
To develop this illustration further I would experiment with vibrant colours so they would be bursting off the page which would make the illustration bold and exciting. I would like to create a couple more prints experimenting with different colour combination like Andy Warhol did. I could see this illustration being printed on a bag or top, medium sized scale.

FMP- First Illustration

From my artist research I decided to create the model layer using hand drawn materials. When doing this it looked less flat and traced compared to computer the drawings. I drew out the model using pencil to a create subtle flow of movement within the lines. I then highlighted the figure which made her vibrant and stand out. I also used the pencil to show the contrast between light and shadow on the figure which made her look more realistic and life-like. This worked well because the tone creates a three dimensional depth. The flowing movement of the biro pen in her hair overlaps and creates a textured pattern.
After creating my first layer I scanned it into Photoshop and experimented with different components. From my sketch book I scanned in developed drawings to play around with. I added a pixelated layer which was dynamic and bold. This layer became dominant because we are drawn to the bright, exciting colours. Having the pixelated layer made the top corner look heavy so I balanced it out with vibrant paint splashes. These worked well because even though they were bold the splashes were soft and gentle making the illustration less blocky. After creating the vibrant layers I create small subtle illustration of pillars to show that my theme was Greek. These worked well because the tiny detail is simple and the marks have been put together to create something highly complexed.
As this was the first illustration I created it was not as successful as the others because there is no link with the colour palette and it seems messy with no formal order. Also the shapes are busy and random. When printed out the illustration was blurry and was not as dynamic and vibrant as I wanted it to be. This error would effect the other illustrations by bringing down the standard of the work so I did not use it in my exhibition. Compared to this illustration my others were more crisp and clean with a professional, slick finish to them. Also the other three illustrations had similar colours and shapes so they had a strong link where as this illustration had a strong contrast because the composition was not solved. If I was going to develop this illustration I would rethink my composition and mark making so there would be a contrast with bold, blocky areas and subtle linear areas. Even though this illustration was unsuccessful I believe it was good for a first go but needed to be improved to get up to the standard of the others.

FMP- Illustration Experiment

The background on this illustration is bold and blocky which contrasts with the model in this illustration. The colour is clean and crisp and has been placed orderly, and does not overlap.
The model is linear which shows flowing movement making her organic and giving her free form. The model has been created in monochrome which makes her simple and minimalistic. The idea of her beig minimalistic contrasts with the background and the clothing because they are loud and vibrant. As the model has been created in monochrome she looks flat and traced, almost like a cartoon. To develop from that I would add tone to give this illustration a three dimensional depth and make it look realistic.
The dominant area of this illustration is the graffiti clothing. The patterned texture gives it depth which makes it bold and dynamic. As the graffiti clothing is vibrant and powerful it makes the illustration unbalanced and bottom heavy.
I experimented with this bold, blocky illustration so I had a variety of different styles to choose from. I think the idea of having graffiti in the clothing is successful because it look quirky and the graffiti has been treated in a different way. Even though this illustration is powerful, the idea of having this much block colour on the first layer would be too overpowering and wash every other layer out. So for that reason I do not think I will use this technique.

Homage to Books- Artist Research Sonia Lamera

The latest project we have been given is called Homage to books. This project limits us to 3 outcomes from all our sessions. I have to explore, design, develop and produce exciting responses to the theme of homage to books.
For this project I didn't know any relevant artists that used the idea of books in their work. To overcome this I did some research on Colossal and Pinterest where I found relevant and unique artists to help inspire  my work.
One of the artists I found was Sonia Lamera. This artist created the alphabet using books. She has used the books to sculpt the letters which gives it an element of pattern as the shapes have been repeated. From sculpting the letters she has made them 3 dimensional which gives it depth and adds tone because of the contrast between the light surfaces and dark corners. I think she decided to create the alphabet because it is what is contained in books, so rather than it just being in the book it is the book, which shows us the writing makes the book what it is. Using the alphabet was a good idea because it is used in everyday life and people can relate to it. From looking at this work it has inspired me to play around with the actual book itself and also to look at typography.

In comparison to Sonia Lamera's books I decided to have ago at playing around with the shape of the books myself. I found this process harder than it looks because you have to have the same size and shape book to create the letters successfully otherwise it would look uneven and wouldn't correctly portray the letters. I don't think my outcomes were very successfu because I didn't have similar books which made my letter look inaccurate. If I was going to do this again I would plan on how I would make the letters so I could choose the correct books to make each one. To develop this I would use the edges of the paper in the books to print the letter which would give it texture.

FMP-Greek Fashion Armour

I have related the armour to the Greek ruins as they both have strong structures and are rigid. The strong edges on the armour give it an element of power by showing a fixed shape. In contemporary fashion we see that armour has been developed into shoulder padding or boning. On Illustrator I have experimented with shape and composition of the armour. I found that using the wand tool creates a bold and definite shape.

FMP-Greek Fashion Colour Palette

In contrast with ancient Greek the contemporary colours are more vibrant. This makes them exciting and playful. There isn't a wide variety of colours but what they do use is block which makes it bold and strong. Looking at ancient Greece the colours were plain and simple which look elegant and flowing. Using the pastel colours emphasise the drapery as we can easily see the shape, because of the strong contrasts in tone. For my final outcomes I am going to use bright, bold colours to make my designs dynamic and energetic. Using watercolour would be a good hand drawn material because it can show the contrasts in tone well, which gives it depth to make it look 3 dimensional.
