FMP- Bridgend Reccreation Centre

From my recent visit to Athens I found the graffiti there inspiring because of the bright bursting colour and the soft styles present. After finding the dynamic graffiti I decided to explore to see if I could find any in my local area, Bridgend. I went down to Bridgend Recreation Centre and found collage like graffiti plastered all over the walls of the car park. The graffiti here was treated like a pattern and was all  bundled together. I could see this as a print for a clothing range or interior. I liked the idea of it being collaged together because this showed a variety of colours which made it vibrant and eye catching. Compared to the graffiti in Athens this is organised chaos. After finding this graffiti I am going to take the idea of taking my own graffiti and creating collages. I'm going to create these collages in clay, print and graphics. Creating these print collages will show how versatile using graffiti is. I will create this in layers which will relate to the method of my artists research.

FMP-Greek Fashion Drapery

This is a page from my sketchbook focusing on drapery in Greek fashion. Drapery is folds and woven patterns of loose-hanging clothing on the human form. It was accessorised to the female form by Greek vase-painters and sculptors of the 15th century and is still a major form of style in sculptures and paintings. The flowing drapery follows the bodies form, emphasizing the twists. The floating drapery shows movement in the lines because of the flowing materials and the actions shown with it. When drawing drapery for my illustrations I'm either going to use biro or ink because they are neat materials and I'll get a clean crisp line to capture the flow of movement in the material. Also using biro and ink I have the option to use strokes freely and glide them across the page to show the floating drapery. I wouldn't use charcoal or watercolour because they are messy and wouldn't give a crisp stroke. Although it would show the contrast with the light and dark on the material and bring in the element of tone. Using the tone can show depth but I just want to focus on the shape.

Magazine Article

For my university interview I had to produce a 250 word document on a fashion topic. I decided to choose fashion illustration because it is something I am passionate about so therefore I was able to create a detailed article about it.

FMP Research- Julian Opie Sketchbook Page

Julian Opie creates portraits which dehumanises people as there is a lack of features which takes away the identity of the person. The reason for doing that is because he feels that everyone is the same even celebrities. These simple portraits have a lack of emotion because the person has been stripped down of all character. These portraits have humour because they are playful and have a lack of emotion. The bold, block colours used makes the portraits striking and exciting. There are minimal elements used in his portraits which gives off a child like atmosphere because you would think a child could produce something this simple. His work is slick because the shapes and colours used are bold and clean which makes it look professional. Even though his work is minimalistic it is sophisticated.
I looked at Julian Opie because I firstly created blocky fashion illustrations for my portfolio. I decided to experiment further with this bold style of drawing to see if it was successful enough to be used in for my final illustrations. Even though Julian Opie's work is slick and professional I think it is too dehumanised for my final illustrations.
His work is inspirational because it looks simple and easy to create but it is sophisticated and clean.
As I researched Julian Opie's work I decided to create a sample using his style of drawing. Likewise to Julian Opie's portraits mine dehumanises the person taking away their identity and makes them look like a cartoon. Also compared to Julian Opie's portraits mine also has bright, blocky colours which make the sample look dynamic and crisp . In contrast to his portraits my sample is not a famous person which almost takes away the idea of everyone being the same because not everyone knows that person for being famous.
I could develop this style of drawing by faded out the bold colours and adding patterns to give it texture. Even though I could do that I think it would be to overpower on the illustration and fade out everything else. For that reason I'm not going to use this technique.

FMP research- Raphael Vicenzi

From looking at Julie Verhoeven's work I decided to look at an illustrator who uses mix media in is illustration. I looked at Raphael Vicenzi's work because there is a lot of exciting, dynamic pieces which it what I'd like to create to have a successful exhibition. From looking at the use of colour in his piece we can see that it bursts of the page which makes these illustrations stand out and appealing to the eye. From first glance we can see that these illustrations and messy and have no real order. If we look closely we can see that eh text and markings have been specifically placed to get across the message of the illustration. In his work he uses a lot of layer and a wide variety of different materials, techniques and processes. One of the main elements to his illustrations is text. He creates the text to link to the images but also to give off different messages and ideas. Without reading the text we aren't able to understand what the image/ photograph is about. This illustrator has inspired me to experiment using a wide range of materials to show a depth of understanding for the illustration. When I create my own work, inspired from this, I am going to start by using tracing paper for the layer so I can see where everything needs to be placed and I can play around with composition.

In my sketchbook I have started to experiment using different materials to show an understanding of his work. I have used biro to show crisp, vibrant lines. I did this to show the flow of movement in the shapes and illustrations present. I think this works well because it relates to the artist reference as I have given their artwork another dimension.

FMP research- Julie Verhoeven

As I looked at Julie Verhoeven's hand drawn pieces I decided to research her more graphic designs. I did this so that I would get a broader range of inspiration to help develop my final outcomes. I looked at her piece 'Twenties Flapper Pearls' because it was created using collage on the computer. From this I decided to do my own version by also creating a collage but instead of using the computer I used hand drawn materials to produce this piece.  I did this to show that you can produce a piece of work using many different materials, which give it different elements. From looking at the collage I have produced it has texture which creates layers and ordering. For the collage I decided to use Greek fashion images to start introducing the fact that it is Greek fashion I am going to be illustrating.
